Collective Effervescence is an ongoing project and collaborative effort led by Hala Abdel Malak, Barbara Adams, and Jane Pirone. Our research and practice focus on the necessity and delight of interdependence and a desire for connection and interspecies commoning. Through speculative storytelling and the creation of generative spaces, we experiment with ways to adjust our thinking and initiate action in relation to living systems. We aim to disentangle and confront the strategies and stories that maintain existing. unsustainable, and unjust conditions. We focus on systemic change through (re)generative practices that shift dominant narratives using multimedia storytelling. We address sovereign stories of heroism, patriotism, scarcity, competition, and violence—transforming these into insurgent tales of collaboration, belonging, abundance, and cooperation. Our work contends with deep-seated and taken-for-granted hierarchies as we seek opportunities to connect not just in struggle, but also in ways that are joyous.
